When my son turned 6, I knew a Mario-themed birthday would be a hit! Here’s how I pulled off a fun and exciting party inspired by his favorite characters from Mario Kart.
The Decorations: Bringing the Mushroom Kingdom to Life
I went all out to make our house look like a level from Super Mario! A few DIY tricks transformed our space:
Balloons as Clouds: White balloons were clustered together to represent Mario's iconic sky. They added a fun 3D effect to the wall.
Brick and Question Mark Blocks: I used simple cardboard boxes, painted to look like Mario’s brick and question mark blocks, and mounted them on the wall. A few plastic gold plates, with a strip of white tap added that coin-collecting touch!
Mario Figure: A mini Mario figure jumping between the blocks brought the scene together, giving the kids something exciting to look at.
Mushroom are from Amazon: https://a.co/d/2jU6Ngb, or your locate dollarstore may carry them.
Birthday Banner was bought from Amazon: https://a.co/d/2FzEvGc This banner is different than shown, its no longer avaible.

Tabletop Décor: I grabbed some adorable mushroom decorations from my local dollar store to tie into the Mario theme. I used green PVC pipe to mimic the classic Mario warp pipes and added mini Mario figurines https://a.co/d/bmexSWG for a fun touch. The yellow question block was a great find from my local Red Apple, adding the perfect finishing detail to the setup!
Wall Art: bought from Amazon https://a.co/d/cpKlJNs I did have to make a frame for them.
And, of course, we couldn’t forget a huge gold number "6" balloon to highlight the milestone birthday from Amazon: https://a.co/d/2t25MFQ

The Food: Keeping it Simple & Fun
For the snacks, I kept things fresh and kid-friendly with a healthy veggie platter arranged like Mario's power-ups! I used colorful cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and broccoli around a bowl of creamy ranch dip. Not only did the kids love it, but it also balanced out the birthday treats nicely.

I couldn’t resist adding some fun treats to go along with the healthy snacks because you can't have a birthday party without them! I took pre-made Rice Krispies squares, cut them into star shapes, and topped them with yellow icing to look like Mario's iconic power stars. Peach Rings and other yummy snacks also made an appearance, adding to the sweet selection for the kids to enjoy!

The Cake: A Mario Kart Masterpiece
The cake was a hit! I made a simple sheet cake but added a Mario Kart twist: This cake started with a store-bought base. A helpful tip: freeze the cake beforehand—it makes removing the original icing much easier for decorating!
Mario Kart figurines: We topped the cake with Mario and his friends racing on the rainbow road (represented by rainbow-colored candy strips). https://a.co/d/8zc1wc1
Star decorations: Bright, colorful star sprinkles made the cake pop with color, and a strip of rainbow candy as the road.
Party Fun: Games and Activities
You can’t have a Mario party without some racing fun! I set up a mini obstacle course for the kids to race around like they were in their very own Mario Kart game.
Another fun idea is to have a piñata shaped like a question block or mushroom.I also placed some coloring sheets on the table to keep the kids entertained.
Throwing a Mario-themed party doesn’t have to be complicated—just focus on key elements from the games that kids recognize and love. It’s the perfect mix of creativity, fun, and Mario magic!
Let me know if you try these ideas for your next Mario party, and don’t forget to share your own spin on this theme!
